What Does SayABC Offer?

SayABC provides an international learning experience to children in China between the ages 7-9. Headquartered in Beijing, the company offers fully immersive one-to-many English language instruction provided online by highly qualified teachers. The curriculum is based on the U.S. Common Core State Standards and uses a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.

Can I apply if I don't have a Bachelor's degree?

Yes! While we do require applicants to have at least a bachelor’s degree for contracts that are longer than 3 months, we believe that training a new generation of teachers is best done through hands-on practice. We’ve teamed up with universities in Canada and the US to offer short-term internships to students majoring in education, and we will consider offering applicants with relevant teaching experience an opportunity to demonstrate their skills in the classroom even if they don’t have a bachelor’s.

What is the application process like?

There are simply 4 steps before becoming SayABC teachers:

Step1: Apply via SayABC website

Step2: Interview–40mins (which contains a 15mins demo class)

Step 3: Consulting agreement signing

Step 4: Orientation meeting & Evaluation class

I cannot sign up on the website! What should I do?

Here are some things you can try

  1. Refresh the page.
  2. Clear your web browser cache.
  3. Switch browsers. Our website is optimized for Chrome, but it can be picky. Try it with other browsers.
  4. Try to connect to the internet from another server or another computer.
  5. In case you try all these options and still encounter problems, email us. Our email is teacher@sayabc.com

How long is the contract for?

We require a 3-month minimum commitment from our applicants. The contract can be renewed.

The website is having some technical issues. What should I do?

What equipment do I need?

  1. A desktop or a laptop with a webcam – The platform does not work on mobile devices like phones or tablets or ipad. We will update the FAQs if that ever changes.
  2. A headset with microphone – We require a headset to increase the quality of your hearing and a microphone to cut down on ambient noise.
  3. Chrome browser – You will need this to access our training materials and classes.
  4. High-speed internet – You will be receiving and transmitting audio and video streams in the course of teaching.

We will provide you with the download link to our teaching platform software once you have been selected for an interview.

How should I book my interview?

You will receive an email with an interview invitation when your resume passes screening. You will be able to login to our Teacher Portal system. We will schedule your interview over there. Please note that we will schedule in Beijing Time, which is UTC+8.

Where will the interview take place?

The interview with SayABC takes place in the online classroom of SayABC. You may visit our website t.sayabc.com to download and install SayABC platform.

What will be an interview like?

The whole interview will last 40 minutes, including a demo class about 15 minutes. You will teach the interviewer who will be playing the part of a 5-8 year old with limited knowledge of English. Feedback will be given within one week.

What will be a mock class like?

During an orientation meeting, our mentor will go through basic platform operations and teaching tools step by step. You are able to learn a variety of useful teaching tips from our mentor in terms of how to teach better in our platform. Also, you have the chance to ask any questions or concerns that you may have.

What is the class schedule time?

Monday to Saturday for Summer Camp. There are four classes for each day. Classes are all scheduled of Beijing time:

  • 18:00-18:40
  • 18:50-19:30
  • 19:40-20:20
  • 20:30-21:10

Why is the interview and demo so important?

All SayABC classes are one-to-four students to facilitate social interaction and group learning.

What are the different types of class?

There are 3 different types of classes:

  • Evaluation classes: 1 vs 4 classes lasting 40 minutes used as the first real class for SayABC new teachers to get familiar of how to teach our students with the Teacher Portal system, and support teacher management team to evaluate and give training to new teachers. Two different types of feedback will be provided to teachers. You will get a training session with an experienced SayABC mentor if a serious issue occurs. Otherwise, a written feedback with tips and reminders will be sent to you.
  • Regular classes: 1 vs 4 classes lasting 40 minutes used to teach the students new language structures, vocabulary, etc. Classes are scheduled from Monday to Saturday. There are 3 units with 9 classes per unit in one homeroom. Classes of a same homeroom will be scheduled on Monday and Thursday; Tuesday and Friday; Wednesday and Saturday every week separately.
  • Summer Camp: 1 vs 4 classes lasting 40 minutes in July and August only used to teach the student new language structures, vocabulary, etc. Classes are scheduled from Monday to Friday. There are 9 classes in one homeroom. One homeroom will be finished in two weeks.

Do I need to prepare teaching materials?

No, SayABC supplies all teaching materials. However, teachers must prepare for class by reviewing the class materials beforehand. Teachers may preview class materials in the classroom on the teacher portal as soon as an available time slot has been booked by our system.

Do teachers need to communicate directly with parents?

No, SayABC office staff will communicate with parents if the need arises. Simply notify Teacher Management on Skype or Support Mail support@sayabc.comif this is the case.

Do teachers always teach the same students?

Yes! Teachers teach the same four students for a minimum of three months at the same time three times a week.

Do classes take place on Skype or on another platform?

SayABC has developed its own education platform to facilitate our one-to-many classes

What is the pay rate?

We offer a pay rate includes base pay and incentive pay.

You will get $15 per 40 minutes’ class, with $6 incentive salary per lesson depends on the performance, totally up to $21, which means up to $28 hourly pay for you.

A teacher might be asked to cover a class with less than 24 hours’ notice. If the teacher accepts the late notice class and take over the class, $7 will be added to the total payment for that class.

A teacher may be asked to take over a group of class in the middle of a unit. If the teacher accepts the rest of the class, $7 will be added to the total payment for each of those classes.

Teachers who teach our Trial Class can get $16 per converted student as an incentive.

When and how will teachers be paid?

All payments are processed on or before the 15th date of each month. All payments are sent out by wire transfer.

I have a question about my pay. Who do I contact?

Where can I find my income and billing information?

Our apologies but currently we do not have this private feature in our system. However, we will send out a list with the number of classes you have taught during the month prior to pay day for your personal records.

How much tax do I need to pay?

SayABC teachers are independent contractors and responsible for their own taxes in accordance with their individual tax jurisdictions or country’s laws.

When renewing a contract, can teachers qualify for a raise?

Teachers will be re-evaluated for a raise at the point of renewal.

How long is the contract? Can teachers take breaks during the contract?

SayABC signs 3-month contracts with applicants who pass their screening process. Please inform SayABC 2 weeks in advance if you want to take time off during your contract.

Problems With Awkward Positioning of the Video

On the Windows system:

One possible reason for incorrect positioning of the video screen is due to the font size setting on your computer.

If this occurs, we will need to reset to a normal font size.

Below is a list of instruction for how to set font size on different version of Windows.

Windows 10:

Right click on “Desktop”–> click on “Display settings”

Click “Advanced Display settings”

Follow the instruction of the above diagram, click on “advanced sizing of text and other items”:

Look at the above diagram, follow the instruction and click on “set a custom scaling level”:

Make sure the “scale to this percentage of normal size” reads 100%.

Windows 7:

Right click on desktop and select “screen resolution”

Problems With the Camera

Unable to switch on camera, unable to click on the camera icon, black screen. Solution: Update the drive.

Update process:

Right click on “Computer”, and select manage:

Follow the diagram, first click “Device Manager”–>“imaging devices”–> right click on “integrated camera”–> click on “Update Driver Software…”–> click “Browse my computer for driver software”–> “USB video device”–> “Next Step”

Wait until update is completed, if the reminder “Restart Computer” pops up, then click on “yes” to restart. If there is no such reminder, then restart is unnecessary.

If the camera shows the name of another software, then you must first uninstall that software before updating the driver and restarting your computer.

Special reminder

You must first exit the classroom before fixing any problems with the camera

DO NOT update driver if you are using an apple IOS product with the windows system, simply switch to the IOS system and restart your computer.

This is because your camera is blocked by 360. How to fix it?

Please log out the and log in again, and when this pictures appears:

  1. Click don’t remind again
  2. Click allow
  3. Click mistake report feedback

Fill in the compulsory section, and click “submit”

Problems With the Speaker

Problem: no sound

First check if you have muted your computer or right click on the speaker and select “Open Volume Mixer” to check if the “SayABC” application is muted:

Right click on the “speaker” icon and select “Open Volume Mixer”

If nothing is muted, but the problem remains, try restarting your computer. If restarting your computer does not work, then please update your driver:

Right click on “computer” and select manage

Right click “Sound, video and game controllers” and select “Update Driver Software…”

Click “Browse my computer for driver software” then click “let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”

Click on “High Definition Audio” then click on next steps

After you are done with updating your driver, you will need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

Special reminder

You must first exit the classroom before fixing any problems with the speaker.

If you are unable to install driver within the device manager, you can try using third-party software

Microphone Doesn't Work

QQ voice message can be heard, but no sound in the classroom. Please check if you are using devices correctly:

Check if the microphone is mute,

Make sure you are correctly using the microphone:

Start the device in the audio editor, and forbid other operations: Right click the speaker, and choose “audio editor”, and double left click the device with green check mark.

Choose levels and see if horn is disabled or not

Enable and click yes, and see if the volume bar moves

If there are still no sound, you need to update the audio driver:

Right click on the computer (my computer, this computer), choose manage:

  1. Right click this computer, and choose manage
  2. Right click Sound video and game controller
  3. Choose update

After updating the driver, you must restart the computer to make it be effective.

You must first exit the classroom before fixing any problems with the microphone.

If you cannot install the driver inside the management device, you can use the third-party driver software to install.

Mac users with windows systems must not update the driver. Switching the system and restart the computer, then it will be fine.

Email VS. Skype/Wechat

Always email us at teacher.support@sayabc.com if you have any questions. During lesson hours, always use Skype/Wechat to communicate with us before sending an Email. Send in the group chat before private chat. We will contact you privately if there is an issue that pertains to you specifically. If a substitute teacher is needed, please tag Yvonne and she will contact you

How do I know if a lesson has been booked?

When a lesson on your schedule has been booked, you will receive confirmation via e-mail. This confirmation message will contain information including time reminder, teaching guidance, way to contact office staff and other relevant information. You will also be able to see the lesson on your schedule on the Teacher Portal. All teaching documents can be found on your teacher portal. You will have access to the classroom an hour before class begins.

How far in advanced must lesson be booked?

Lessons are booked at least 24 hours in advance of their start times. If a member of SayABC Teacher Management Team wishes to schedule a short notice class, we will first confirm with you via Skype.
During the summer (July and August), homerooms will be matched every Saturday and teachers will be able to see their list of successfully matched homerooms on their portal afterwards.

I am sick and I need to cancel my classes. What do I do?

Send your detailed request via Skype: teachers@sayabc.com at least 24 hours prior to the start of your classes. We will reassign your class to another teacher.

Send your detailed request via skype: teachers@sayabc.com, if your classes started within 4 hours

Send a mail to us: teacher.support@sayabc.com to request for a leave more than 4 hours before the classes started

How do I teach substitute classes?

Standby teachers can inform SayABC staff in the group named SayABC Sub Teachers on Skype. SayABC staff may then contact you when need. Once the class is assigned to you. You will be able to see the class schedule in your teaching portal, and enter the classroom for lessons.

What is standby?

Being on standby is willing to be contacted last minute to teach a lesson that is usually another teacher’s lesson. Standby teachers can get an extra $7/lesson bonus. However, being on standby does not guaranty a class.

How are class bookings determined? How can I increase my booking rate?

Currently, a computer system matches the homerooms based on both teachers’ and students’ availability. The computer also gives priority to teachers who are able to teach a homeroom from beginning to the end for a consecutive 9 day period, minus Saturday and Sunday.

What feedback do I need to provide Sayabc after a class?

Attendance sheet
Fill it out. If you don’t, your attendance will also not be counted. Student “finished” the class even if they only show up for a minute. If your attendance sheet does not pop up/cannot find your attendance sheet, find it by finding your lesson in the completed tab.

Click on the 3 dots. You will see the attendance option on the drop down menu.

Feeback form
Get on your portal. Go to the completed tab and finish all the feedbacks. If the feedback form is not filled, there will be a monetary penalty. You can refer to your contract for details. If you have a trouble with your feedback form, please take a screenshot and send it to us privately via either Skype or Wechat. We will help you to deal with the problem there.

There are two students in the classroom. Should I start to teach?

Beginning your teaching regardless of the number of students showing up. There are usually 2-4 students in a real classroom.

My student is not wearing headphones. There is loud background noise

Notify us, and we will communicate with the students’ guardians. Mute the student except for the time that they are participating.

My student is struggling in class.

Notify us, and we will communicate with the students’ guardians and maybe switch them to another class. In the meantime, do not neglect them. Please try to involve them as much as possible without disrupting the class order.

My student is not following direction/fidgeting/doing their own thing.

Notify us, and we will communicate with the students’ guardians. Meanwhile, please do not exclude them from the lesson, please continue to give equal amount of attention to the particular student.
